Hack The Badge

What is it?

The HackTheBadge is based on an atmel AVR 325p processor and is compatible with the Arduino Platform. It has:

  • 32K of flash
  • 2K of RAM
  • 1K of EEPROM
  • Six programmable pushbutton switches
  • 3×5 LED matrix display (8 bit matrix)
  • Five programmable LED lights
  • Four PWM outputs
  • 46! GPIO channels
  • Eight available Analog/Digital conversion channels
  • On-Board battery power (1200mAh 3V Lithium cells)
  • 1.8→3V→5V operating range
  • ISP/JTAG headers broken out for easy programming
  • Built-in USB FTDI chip for power, serial debugging, and programming

The board is compatible with many Arduino shields, and has a shield compatible pin layout. (Freeduino) Specialty shields may require pin-specific functions, and special care should be taken to check if a pin special function is mapped identically on this board. A list of known compatible shields will be listed here as they are tested.

Is it open source?

Yes! The schematic, eagle board files, BOM, and project files along with demos come with each board under the Creative Commons Share-Alike 3.0 License. Contributions of code, ideas, and changes to the schematic are not only allowed, but encouraged! You will be able to check out the latest versions of all files via SVN. Also, there is a vibrant and active Arduino community with whom you can share code, ideas, and problems with.

What does it look like?

Fourteen black HackTheBadge boards were given out at Defcon 17. The production boards are white, with a black silkscreen:
